DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

The Department of chemistry was established in the year 1939. It has 6 faculty members. It is the recipient of the Star College Scheme of the Dept. of Biotechnology, Government of India from 2012. The department has designed the contents of the syllabus with the following objectives.

  • To understand the role of chemistry in life.
  • To organize and comprehend the factual information and then apply the same to practical situations.
  • To explain the relationship between structure, physical and chemical properties and to make predictions concerning these properties and discuss changes by applying mechanisms.
  • To appreciate the use of theories in order to rationalise chemical structure and behaviour.

The Department of Chemistry offers project work as a part of its curriculum and encourages students to take up internship with local industries. It also offers to its students add- on courses such as

  • Computers for chemists
  • Forensic Chemistry
  • Cosmetic Science

The Department also conducts extension activity "Free time School" for school children. The other activities conducted for students by the Department include industrial visits, attending conferences and seminars, participation in science fests and competitions.

  • The department of Chemistry conducted the lab event "ALCHEMIA" on the occasion of ZENITH 2017-18. As there were 78 participants (34 teams) prelims were conducted on the 9th of August, 2017 . Twelve teams were selected for the finals. The finals were conducted on the 11th of August, 2017 on the day of the science fest.
