Department of Chemistry 

The International Year of Chemistry 2011 commemorates the achievements of Chemistry, and its contributions to humankind. The theme of IYC 2011 is “Chemistry – Our Life, Our Future”, and the focus is on the achievements of Chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. It can be claimed in unequivocal terms that Chemistry has a great role to play in solving global problems and the students who imbibe the spirit of Chemistry have global presence and prominence.

Objectives of the Department :

To train our students in the field of Chemistry so that they can go for higher studies or can find job placements.

Activities conducted for  the year 2010-11

  • One staff member and 28 students of III B.Sc. presented ‘CHEM-MAGIC’ programme on 15th July 2010, for the students of Presidency School, Mangalore.
  • As a part of ‘ENIGMA’ department conducted ‘CHEM-RANGOLI’ competition on 14th August. Eight teams participated with two members in each team.
  • On 20th and 21st August, one staff member from post graduate department of Chemistry along with two PG and two UG students attended the seminar on ‘EXCITING WORLD OF POLYMERS’ organized by Milagres College, Kallianpur. It also included an industrial visit on 21st August.
  • On 31st August, 35 students from III B.Sc. participated in the educational trip to ‘The Western India Plywood Limited’ industry at Valapatnam, Kannur.
  • ‘CHEM-MAGIC’ programme was demonstrated to about 150 students of  St. Agnes High School on 2nd September by the final year B.Sc. students.
  • On 23rd September, one-day intercollegiate seminar on  ‘GREEN CHEMISTRY-For A Better World’ was organized. 100 delegates from different UG and PG colleges attended the seminar. The resource persons were
  • Prof. N.Jayaraman from I.I.Sc. who spoke on ‘Organomettalic Catalysis’ and ‘Dendritic Macromolecules’ and Prof.A.Nityananda Shetty from N.I.T.K. who discussed about ‘Green Chemistry’. Students who scored more than 85% marks in Chemistry during Ist and IInd year were honoured during the programme.
  • Four staff members and five PG students attended the workshop on ‘Microscale experiments in Chemistry’ organized by S.D.M.College, Ujire, on 29th  eptember.
  • On 7th  Dec. ,20 students of Criminology department, Roshni Nilaya College,   visited the department. Two staff members explained some basic concepts of chemistry and demonstrated some experiments to them.
  • On 11th December , 50 students from III B.Sc. participated in the educational trip to ‘Campco Chocolate Factory’ at Puttur.

Rasa Chethana

The Department of Chemistry at St Agnes College  organized “Rasa Chetana”, a one Day regional symposium at Conference Hall here on Friday September 2. The symposium  focused on rejuvenation of chemistry education in the science curriculum particularly at the secondary level. Eminent educationist Prof. Uday Maitra of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore  delivered the key note address.

 

The progarmme's  objectives were to bring the concerned subject experts, teachers and the officials to a common forum. And to deliberate on the issues like - the basics of Chemistry, more importance on application of Chemistry, and less practical orientation than theory. The event also aimed to decide on necessary steps to be taken to make the Chemistry portion more as a practical science, Chemistry teaching with demonstrations and application of Chemistry in day-to-day life.

 

The symposium was jointly organized by St Agnes College, Text Book Society, DSERT, Govt. of Karnataka and Pilikula Regional Science Centre(R), Mangalore. Coordinator of Text Book Society and noted academician Prof G S Moodambadithaya and educationist cum communicator Prof M R Nagaraju, Bangalore,  were moderators at the programme.

Chem Fiesta

Dr B S Sherigar, former vice-chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga delivered the inaugural speech at a one-day programme for High School Students to mark ‘International Year of Chemistry’ organized by the department of chemistry, St Agnes College Conference hall on Wednesday December 7. Chemistry is a fundamental aspect of international science and its scientific temperament can help raise extra-ordinary discoveries, said Dr B S Sherigar. ‘Chem Fiesta’, an exhibition on Chemistry as part of the celebration wasbe held for two days at the college auditorium which was sponsored by UGC, New Delhi.
