Department of Social Work
Social work is a noble profession which aims at improving the quality of life of the people who experience a broad range of problems in society. Professional social work deals with assisting individuals, groups or communities to restore or enhance their capacity for social functioning, while creating societal conditions favorable to their goals.
Social workers help people in helping themselves and thus enable them to be self reliant. Through counseling, increasing resources, public awareness, social programs and health services they aim at reaching out to the unreached, deprived masses of society.
Professional social work aims at building up harmony in society. As such its scope is expanding and it is now international and inter- racial. In the present society, social work provides services for children, women, youth, family, laborers, aged, disabled, physically and mentally ill and challenged, destitutes and many other deprived sections of society. These programs of social work are carried out through different social welfare agencies.
Social work provides a suitable career to students with a mature outlook, patience, dedication, commitment, genuine liking for people and concern for their welfare and to whom career is not just a means of earning money. The increasing problems in society also call for more professionals to work in the direction of welfare. For this very reason the department of social work was established in St. Agnes College in the year 2008.
The Department of Social Work functions on the principle of "helping people to help themselves" by enhancing their problem solving capacity and thereby making them self reliant. The strength of the department is vested in the field practice where students reach out to the unreached masses and strive for their betterment. "Tiny drops make mighty ocean"- this phrase is thoroughly reflected as each student has succeeded in making a small yet remarkable difference in society by working for the welfare of people.
