The programme was designed to equip the participants with adequate knowledge and skills to analyze the data and to give an insight into the techniques of Statistics. The programme was open to the Faculty members of various constituent colleges of Mangalore University. It was a two day program which was conducted by the eminent resource persons
Mr.MITHUN. D.J from SPSS Bangalore.

Teachers have to go beyond their curriculum and improve their skills. He also said that students who pass out from St. Agnes college have the potential to succeed as they have been endowed with the best faculty around He said that the program would be useful to get some knowledge on the subject Statistics which touches everybody’s life. He also opined that to teach Data Analysis techniques and to learn was not an easy task. In this direction the program organized is something very special and more useful. Our beloved principal Dr.Sr.Prem D’souza also put forth her thoughts, greeted the participants and wished success for the program.
After the formal inaugural of the programme, we started off with the first session by Mr.MITHUN. D.J from SPSS Bangalore, on “Introduction of SPSS” where Mr. Mithun introduced us to the SPSS package saying that it was a “statistical package for solution and sciences”, having recently changed its identity to PASW-Predictive Analytic Software. Their latest offer is the 17.0 version of the package which offers base+13 modules and with its advanced modules problems become much easier to handle.
Second Session was by Dr.Shreemathy Mayya focused on Data and its types, Creating files, Data entry, Exporting and Importing data into SPSS
The third session was continued by Dr. Shreemathy Mayya on the topic Basic Statistical concepts: Types of Research, variables, select cases, sub samples, Split file, Merge cases/files, creating new variables (Compute functions), Recode and Data transform options.
In the fourth session Mr. Mithun D.J explained about Reliability and Validity. Data and time transformations, OLAP cubes – Tables, Graphs , Exporting graphs
The day’s last session i.e., fifth session was by Ms. Asha Kamath enlightened the delegates on the topic Summary Statistics- Overall and Category wise, Exporting tables, Frequency and Cross tables
The second day started with the sixth session by Prof. Ismail B in which the the resourse person tried to throw light on the topics Concepts of Tests of significance, Multiple & Logistic regression.
The seventh session was by Dr. Shreemathy Mayya on the topic Parametric tests- t test
( One sample, two samples and related observations), ANOVA. Post Hoc Multiple Comparisons. In the eighth session Ms. Asha Kamath explained Non Parametric Tests –
(One sample, two samples and related observations), One way ANOVA, Chi square. The ninth session was by Dr. Shreemathy Mayya on the topic Correlation and Regression analysis with examples.
The last session of the programme i.e., the tenth session was conducted by Mr. Mithun D.J from SPSS on the topic Multiple regression, Logistic Regression, Factor analysis, Cluster Analysis & Forecasting
On the second day the feedback from the participants was collected. After analyzing the feedback we observed that participants gained a lot of knowledge and the program gave an insight into the Techniques of Data Analysis using SPSS 17.0. The participants dream of equipping themselves with the skills of Statistical techniques got fulfilled in the programme. On 17th July, 2009 at about 4.15p.m we began our valedictory function. It started with a prayer song, The welcome speech was given by the program coordinator Mrs. Shubharekaha . The chief guest for the evening was. Dr. Sr. Lydia Fernandes. In her address she said that way back in 1970, She did her M.Ed in BANGALORE which implied a huge amount of Statistics. SPSS was started in 1960 but they were not fortunate then. At that time she had to go to Bangalore to learn more about Statistics(Data Analysis).
But St.Agnes developed this Subject in Mangalore and needs some good research centres of data analysis. She also said that the programme came to an end on a good note with everyone being satisfied and hope St.Agnes College continued to hold such educative programmes in the future.
She congratulated the organizers and the college for the 2 days Faculty Development Programme in collaboration with SPSS South Asia Pvt.Ltd BANGALORE.
