The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, has selected our collegefor the financial assistance under the 'Star College Scheme'. This scheme is for improving critical thinking, innovations in teaching and learning and to improve 'hands on' experimental work at undergraduate level in Life sciences.

Under the scheme, the DBT identifies colleges from all over India through the advertisement. With the constant support from the science departments, Our College applied for this project and five departments namely Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology have been selected for the financial assistance under "STAR COLLEGE SCHEME"of DBT-MST in 2012.

All the departments involved in the STAR programme have been executing the scheme excellently, focusing its goals and objectives. Major objectives of the scheme are,

  • To strengthen the academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and training.
  • To enhance the quality of the learning and teachingprocessto stimulate original thinking through 'hands–on' exposure to experimental work and participation in summer schools
  • To promote networking and strengthen ties with neighbouring institutions and other laboratories.
  • To conduct specialized training programmes for faculty improvement for optimizing technical capabilities.
  • To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading of existing facilities.
  • To provide access and exposure to students to research laboratories and industries in the country.
  • To help in devising standard curricula and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's)/kits for practical; and to provide better library facility to students and teachers.

QUALITATIVE IMPROVEMENTS DUE TO DBT SUPPORT

Students:  Enhancement in the scientific Excitement, Awareness, Involvement and Progression towards Research, Field trips, guest talks, workshops, hands on training, summer schools, Educational visits and new practical helped students to have first-hand experience of advances in Science, Skill enhancement and progression to higher studies.

Faculty: Transformation in the Level of teaching, vision towards Life Sciences and increased research aptitude, Development of ICT based teaching – learning content for the students, Putting Academic expertise to Hands on training in form of workshops, curriculum enrichment, Faculty Development Programmes, Interdesciplinary activities with other departments, Workshops for the neighbouring PU and Degree Colleges who are deprived of the instruments.

Physical Resources: Enrichment in library resources in form of Books, Manuals, Instruments like Microscope, Conductometer,Potentiometer, Flame photometer, GM Counter,Autoclave, Electronic balance,Colorimeter, PH meter, Micro pipette etc. in multiples helped the students to get hands on Experience in all the experiments.

Interdisciplinary Approach:Intensification in interdisciplinary approach with other departments of the College has removed the concept of compartmentalization. Each and every workshop is planned by all the five Departments together. Arranged the various Guest lectures on Interdisciplinary topics like Chemistry as a Central science and importance of some laws of physics in day to day life. The Principle behind all the instruments like Flame photometer, PH meter, Colorimeters which are used by all the departments were explained clearly to the students.

Under this Scheme, the College has implemented short-term inter disciplinary in-house science projects to kindle the research interests and scientific temper and to encourage students to take life science as career. Students are also introduced to new experiments that exposes them to the latest and modern trends in the respective areas and it has been aimed at kindling their interest in science, strengthen their knowledge and promote innovative thinking.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

The college places on record its sincere thanks to the Department of Biotechnology (DBT),Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, for the financial support and opportunity given to strengthen the Basic Sciences. This scheme has benefited nearly 500 undergraduate students and we are sure that similar financial assistance will help the young scientists to pursue higher studies and research which will benefit the society at large.
