SPICMACAY
Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youthis a Sub-chapter of the Mangalore Chapter. Parents, staff and students are encouraged to take membership in the same and deepen their love for Indian culture.
The SPICMACAY Cell has the objective of keeping Indian Art and Culture alive, and works for its proliferation amongst all, especially the students. The cell organized various programmes to meet this purpose, during the years 2005 to 2011. They maintained a theme for every year, with the emphasis ranging from folk musical instruments to the performing arts- both folk and traditional/ classical. Several competitions are conducted every year with the year’s theme in mind and ‘Innovative Folk Dances of India’ is the topic for an annual competition for the students of the college. Orientation programmes were organized every year in collaboration with SPICMACAY, Mangalore Chapter, NITK, Surathkal, from 2008 to 2011. An intercollegiate Variety Show on the theme “Indian Culture and Mythology” was conducted in March 2010. On September 11, 2006, SPICMACAY invited Mrs. Sujatha Mishra for “VIRASAT” – an Odissi dance performance and in September 2009, the internationally renowned artist Margi Vijaya Kumar gave a Kathakkali dance programme for our students.

In the year 2006-07, twenty two students registered for an Honours Programme in “Bharathanatyam” and in March 2007, four SPICMACAY members attended a State Level Workshop in Odissi. With the view of exposing our students to Indian classical and folk dances, University and State level workshops were organized during the period 2005-2011. A Bharathanatyam Workshop by Vidwan Mohan Kumar and Vidushi Rajashree from Mangalore (October 2005) along with Vijay Manjeshwar (Bangalore), state level workshop of Kathak by Prof. Prabhakar Joshy from Mangalore, by Shila Mehta from Mumbai (September 2007), of Gujarathi Folk Dance by Srirekha Mehta and Aditi Mehta from Mumbai (January 2009), of Punjabi folk dance by Karamjith Singh and Group and songs by Ramesh Kalmadi and Group from Udupi and Mime Ramdas of Mangalore (January 2011) are the highlights of the Cell’s activities. Student members who contribute consistently are felicitated regularly by this Cell.
