The Departments of Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology of St. Agnes College, Mangaluru, organized a two-days National Level Seminar sponsored by DBT, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi under Star College Status on "Food & Human Welfare- Future & Beyond" in the College Conference Hall for the College Lecturers and students of UG & PG.The aim of the seminar was to create awareness among the teaching and student fraternity about the importance of Food, Health and Human Welfare in modern age, to provide a comprehensive overview of current research and a unique opportunity for students to interact and revitalize research attitude and to present scientific posters.
The programme was inaugurated Dr Mukul Das FNASc,FNAAS,FST, CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicological Research ,Lucknow, the chief guest who also delivered the keynote address. Dr Sr Jeswina A.C. Principal, St. Agnes College presided over the programme.Mrs Saramma E P, HOD, Zoology ,the co-ordinator of the programme welcomed the gathering. Mrs Emima David, Dean Science welcomed the chief guest with flowers. Dr Maria Lobo, HOD Botany presented the highlights of the seminar & Dr Ita Gonsalves, Faculty in Chemistry proposed vote of thanks. Dr Geetha Pinto, HOD, Chemistry, PG studies and the co-ordinator of Star Programmes was also present on the occasion. The various sessions by eminent scientists that followed were as follows:"Food-borne diseases and their prevention; New Paradigms" by Dr Mukul Das FNASc,FNAAS,FST, CSIR- Indian Institute of Research , Lucknow, "Traditional Sweets- A functional Approach" by Dr Chethana R., Central Food Technology Research Institute CFTRI), Mysuru , " Quality control in Fish as Food " by Dr Manja Naik, Associate Professor , Fisheries College,"Balanced Diet essential for Good Health" by Mrs Suvarna Hebbar, Chief Dietitian, KMC, Manipal , "Modern trends in Food Toxicology, Food Safety & Food Quality" by Dr Shamshad Begum ,University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangaluru, "Probiotics in Health and Nutrition" by Dr Prathap Kumar Shetty H ,Pondicherry University , Pondicherry , "Careers in Food Science" by Dr Reeteka Sud,NIMHANS, Bangalore. Participants were 180 in number including faculty & students of UG & PG having come from various colleges belonging to Mangalore University, Mysore University, Manipal University St Aloysius College Autonomous and St Agnes College, Autonomous .
